Philoptochos is the philanthropic arm of our Greek Orthodox Church. The ladies of our chapter (Saints Anargyroi) work hard and many times unnoticed, but with love, support and cooperation in order to accomplish each year’s goals.
The Ecclesiastical year 2018-2019 started strong with our annual “Back to School” drive. About 100 backpacks full of school supplies were delivered to Home Front – a place dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty.
In November, we had our annual and biggest fundraiser, Yiayia’s Kitchen. We thank God and all who worked to make it successful and it allowed us a generous 2019 budget.
In early December, we had our Christmas Gathering together with the local chapters of the Daughters of Penelope and the Parents-Teachers Organization that was very well attended. Monetary as well as actual gifts were presented to Womanspace as this event is always dedicated to this important mission.
The annual Vasilopita Event was offered to the community in early January and in February we held the Membership Luncheon. A very informative presentation on Saint Basil Academy was made by Board Member Peter Kakoyiannis as SBA is one of the many ministries we support yearly.
Like every year, we celebrated the beginning of Lent with our Loukoumades sale on Sunday of Orthodoxy and we again sold out!
For our annual April Food Drive, we partnered with Mercer Street Food Bank and their “Send Hunger Packing” campaign. Over 120 meal packs were assembled and delivered to MSFB, to be distributed to children who do not get to eat outside school.
On Holy Thursday, we enjoyed fellowship as we followed tradition and prepared the beautiful Red Eggs distributed after Holy Pascha Divine Liturgy and on Saint George Feast Day. Philoptochos celebrated the Feast Day of our Patron Saint George the Monday after Holy Pascha, by hosting a delicious luncheon with about 150 people in attendance!
In May, we held the annual “Mother of the Year Presentation”, with Angie Zimnes being the recipient of this year’s honor. We congratulate and thank Angie for all her hard and selfless work she has been offering to the many ministries of our community over the years.
All these beautiful events are accompanied by our main reason of existence, our generous contributions to those less fortunate. Here are some of our chapter’s offerings this year:
• Contributor to the Emergency Social Services Fund of our Metropolis of NJ
• Financial assistance and food cards to needy cases in our community
• Fulfilled Commitments to Ecumenical Patriarchate, Saint Basil Academy, Saint Michael’s Home for the Aged and Saint Photios Shrine
• HOPE for Human Trafficked Women Project contribution
• Christmas Gifts provided to NJ families in need
• Greek School Scholarship
• Saint Jude Children’s Research
• Hellenic College/Holy Cross
• Deborah Hospital
• Aid to Greece/Cyprus
• Meals on Wheels
• National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians
We cannot forget that none of the above would be possible without the work, interest, and endorsement of all of you, as well as all the women who laid the foundation before us, so we can continue building and working for our Lord.
New Members are always welcome, so please consider joining Philoptchos and make a difference to someone’s life today! The first meeting of the New Ecclesiastical year is on Sunday, September 22, after the Divine Liturgy. Hope to see all the familiar as well as new faces there!
Please refer to the Philoptochos Calendar and stay informed on all Philoptochos activities.
